The annual Joint Law
Enforcement conference for 2008 will be held at the Wichita Airport
Hilton Hotel starting May 21, 2008 and will conclude after the Law
Enforcement Awards banquet Friday evening. This will be the 20th
annual event that is co-sponsored by the Kansas Peace Officers
Association, the Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police and the Kansas
Sheriff's Association. Each year, the event closes with the
recognition of Kansas law enforcement officers that have been recognized
for their actions in the line of duty for the past year.
Unfortunately, we will this year again honor another officer that gave
the ultimate sacrifice.
The
reservation line for the hotel is 1-800-247-4458 or 316-945-5272. Room
rates are $88 plus 12.3% tax. The cutoff date is set at May 4, 2008.
Fees are: Registration $30, Banquet $25, Shooting pistol and shotgun, $5
each and Golf $30.

QPR Suicide Prevention Training
Police officers frequently come into contact with suicidal persons.
An article in the FBI's archives estimates "suicide by cop" to comprise
17 to 48% of the deaths attributed to line of duty shooting by officers.
Being provoked or attacked by suicidal persons whose intention it is to
oblige the officer to shoot them in self-defense makes a working
knowledge of suicide etiology crucial. Law enforcement personnel
may also learn of a suicide crisis involving a fellow officer, personal
family member, or civilian friend. You may be the only
"gatekeeper" capable of responding to save a life. Increasingly,
police officers fill important gatekeeper roles while on and off duty in
schools, neighborhoods, college campuses and non-traditional work sites. |

Public Safety Technology Tools,
Techniques and Assistance
Technology has evolved over the years in its use and importance to the
overall public safety mission. Technology has become the silent
partner, enhancing capabilities, and helping to stretch thin resources.
This presentation will provide an overview of several ongoing and
emerging technology programs, which have significant potential to
support Federal, State and Local Public Safety technology programs of
the U.S. Department of Justice/National Institute of Justice and how
Public Safety can leverage this work as well as get assistance in their
technology endeavors. |
