In 1981, Wichita, KS Police Chief Richard LaMunyon had a group of officers that wanted to run a torch from city hall to South High in Wichita to raise awareness for the summer Special Olympic Kansas (SOKS) Games.  Chief LaMunyon strongly supported the initiative and felt that Special Olympics Kansas was a fitting cause to unite local law enforcement agencies, giving them closer ties to the community at large and to a very special population. After three successful runs in Kansas, Chief LaMunyon presented this program to the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).

Since that time, the Law Enforcement Torch Run has grown to be the largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle for Special Olympics worldwide.  Across the globe, law enforcement officers carry the Flame of Hope on interstate relays, running for a common cause to bring the Torch to the Opening Ceremonies of their state’s Special Olympics Summer Games.

More importantly, officers continually interact with SOKS athletes and are the primary medal presenters at local, area and state competitions.  Law Enforcement officers are highly respected by the athletes who take pleasure in receiving their medal from an officer.  As Torch Runners and volunteers for Special Olympics, you have the opportunity to make a difference and to change lives.  Not just the lives of the athletes, but your own life as well.

More than 700 officers volunteer annually to raise funds and awareness for SOKS athletes year-round.  Over $300,000.00 per year is generated for the Special Olympics Kansas programs.  Officers raise funds in their communities in the following ways:

  • LETR Merchandise
  • Polar Plunge
  • Tip-A-Cop
  • Cops on Top
  • Golf Tournament
  • Penny Drive
  • Popcorn Stand off
  • And more!

If you can volunteer, even just one hour per month, you will make a difference in the life of a Special Olympics athlete.  In addition to the joy you will experience when you interact with the athletes, participating officers have the opportunity to:

  • Earn incentive prizes, including trips
  • Network with officers from across the state and internationally
  • Build your resume with extra honors and activities
  • Receive positive media recognition
  • Have a larger presence in the community
  • Give citizens the opportunity to see officers volunteering in the community
  • And have fun with other officers and volunteers!

Be A Fan and join the Kansas Law Enforcement Torch Run today!
